Jakobs Pilgrimage Trail “Monastery Route”: Historic Pilgrimage from Worms to Metz
The Jakobs Pilgrimage Trail “Monastery Route” is a significant pilgrimage path that combines historic trade routes with Christian pilgrimage tradition, guiding hikers for around 266 kilometers through Rheinhessen, the Palatinate, Saarland, and into Lorraine.
Route and Significance
- The starting point is Worms Cathedral, following ancient trade routes already known to Celts and Romans.
- The route leads through Rheinhessen, the Palatinate, Saarland, and Lorraine – with many historic monastery sites, hence the name “Monastery Route.”
- In Göllheim, the trail splits into a northern and a southern branch, which later rejoin at Landstuhl.
Trail Marking
Since 2011, the Monastery Route has been continuously marked – with yellow arrows and the characteristic scallop shell of Europe as a signpost.
Sights
Pilgrims encounter historic monasteries, churches, and monastery ruins along the way – for example in Otterberg or at Münsterhof in Göllheim – as well as many other spiritual and cultural-historical sites.
